Family Tree DNA's Super Summer Sale Featuring Family Finder!

I just received an email announcing a short sale at Family Tree DNA featuring their autosomal DNA test*, Family Finder. This sale is for new customers only, starting at Midnight (CDT) and ending on Saturday, August 25th at 11:59 PM (CDT).

Dear Family Tree DNA Project Administrator,

It seems that every time we run a super sale that a few people email us days later that they were traveling, sick or just hadn't looked at their emails in time, so for all of you who have wanted to entice a friend, neighbor or reluctant relative to get involved in Genetic Genealogy here's one more opportunity, but it will last for only 72 hours.
These are the only two options on sale, and they are geared specifically for newcomers. This sale will end on Saturday, August 25, at 11:59PM.

  1. CeCe, I keep trying to get to this. I found the page at FTDNA that has a big "coupon" advertising the sale. When I click on it, I get a page for FF for $289 w/o the Mt. I started filling out the form thinking it would lead me to the sale combination kit, but it didn't. I did get to a page where they ask for a coupon code. I opened a new window to look at that page with the sale advertisement with it's "coupon" graphic but couldn't find a code. Do you know what is going on with this thing? I do not have an account with FTDNA so I should be OK to get the sale price. -------Jo

    1. When I click on the big "coupon" on the home page it allows me to order the advertised test, so I'm not sure why it isn't working for you.

You can also go to "Products" on the upper left and scroll down to:

COMBINED TESTS FOR MALE AND FEMALE LINES - FOR GENEALOGY AND ANTHROPOLOGY

      Family Finder + mtDNA
      More info...
Order Now was $339.00 now $249.00

If that still doesn't work call them or send an email to helpdesk@ftdna.com before the sale ends.

      For Sales: (713) 868-1438

One more thing, after you click on the big coupon, FF alone will come up on top, but scroll down and you should see the other options.

  3. I want to thank you for posting the coupon for 23andme a couple weeks ago. I wanted the medical stuff too so, after trying for ages to narrow down what test I would get (can only afford one), I decided to go for it (it's at the lab).

People talk a lot about which company to use but I'm still unclear about the differences. I ruled out Ancestry's autosomal because of the lack of raw data and the multiple errors (plus the fact that I'm still on the waiting list for an invite). The price is very inviting ($99) but, ultimately, it doesn't seem worth it as the one and only test I do.

Here, with the coupon for FTDNA, it's $250 for autosomal plus either mt or Y. At 23andme, with the coupon, it was the same price for autosomal, mt *and* Y (well, men get both, us women only get mt), plus the medical tests (which are of great interest to some, a distraction to others). Yet most people seem to prefer FTDNA. I know they have a bigger database for matching bio relatives (and at $79 to transfer 23andme data to FTDNA, it will be a while before I'm in both databases) but what other advantages?

Some people say the mt test at FTDNA is better than 23andme's. Is it? And the Y test? With this sale at FTDNA, it's just a Y-12, which can't possibly be better than whatever 23andme offers. Any difference in the autosomal tests?

I've read as many of your blog posts about these differences but I'm still unclear on the differences. I feel good about my decision, and am eager to see the results (heck, I'd have done it for the medical info alone, well, maybe not budgeted it) but I still want to learn more.

    Thanks!
